Mia's wild mustangs

In the summer of 2011, Mia went to Florida where a lot of mustangs are regularly rounded up for auction. Her goal was to buy five wild mustangs and train them to be calm, balanced and rideable domestic horses – in just one month.

The American cowboys, horse whisperers and horse breeders said it was impossible.

There is a television programme in the USA called ‘The Wild Mustang Makeover’, where a wild horse is tamed and trained in three months.

Facts

There were two million wild mustangs on the grasslands of the USA in 1900. Today there are around 33,000.

The last of the mustangs live in California, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Arizona and New Mexico where the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) captures thousands of wild mustangs each year to make room for more farmland.

Americans have always kept the wild horse populations down. In the old days, the cowboys would ride out to catch part of the herd but they could only go as far as their own horses could run.

Today, the Americans round up the entire herd with helicopters, forcing them over several hundred kilometres of rough terrain.

Many mares lose their unborn foals along the way, while young horses and foals literally run their hooves off as they try to keep up with the herd.

The mustangs are sold at auction, and can be bought for 125 USD. If the mustangs are not bought at the first or second auction, and they get pushed to the third auction, they can be bought for 25 USD.

Many of them are used as rodeo horses and only live a couple of years. Others are put down or slaughtered.

Robert Redford

“I believe, as do so many of my fellow Americans, that the wild horse is an irreplaceable national treasure. It would be a tragic mistake to allow this noble creature to disappear from our western landscape.”

Richard Gere

“Our wild horses are close to the hearts of almost all Americans, and it seems therefore wholly UN-American to use the solution of slaughter when there are other alternatives.”
